However, certain species of algae and different types of chemicals also create chloroform. The byproducts of chlorinating water can cause severe health problems, including increased cancer risk, pregnancy defects, and damage to the kidneys and liver. Why Does Water Contain Chloroform? Chloroform enters the water systems due to mismanagement of waste, including waste from paper mills, paper companies, wastewater from sewage treatment plants, and drinking water with too much added chlorine. Chloroform dissolves effortlessly in water, allowing it to move easily into groundwater systems. Once the groundwater is contaminated, it is affected for a long time and can move to our drinking water. Can Chloroform Be Removed From Water? Like other trihalomethanes, the best way to remove chloroform is with high-quality granular activated carbon, which is found in most reliable home water filtration systems. The National Library of Medicine published an article suggesting that boiling chloraminated water for at least one minute reduced the concentration of chloroform by 74-98%. The combination of boiling your water and then filtering it through an activated carbon filter will remove the majority of the chloroform contaminants. Chloroform can be removed from drinking water on a more industrial level via a two-step process. The contaminated water is placed into a convection tank and passes through a “curtain” of compressed air that removes the chloroform from the water. The air is then treated using a charcoal bed, which also removes chloroform, before it is released back into the atmosphere.
