Is there a way to tell if pH balance is off in fish tank?

Asked a year ago

My son has a mini aquarium he keeps in his rooom with a few fish. He's been noticing some of the smaller fish are more irritable than usual and he thinks something might be wrong with them. In my experience, fish tend to like clean, balanced water and I'm wondering if there's a way to tell if the pH levels in the aquarium are wrong?

Fish irritability is one of the signs that the pH level is off. Other signs include algae and dirt build-up and pale-looking fish. The most accurate method for testing the pH of aquarium water is to use an electronic pH meter. In general, fish tanks and aquariums should have a neutral pH of 7.
