Is demineralized distilled water safe for pets?
Asked 3 years ago
For health reasons, I have started drinking demineralized and distilled water. I’m a bit worried about what’s in our tap water, so I prefer not to risk contracting a disease or consuming a possibly harmful chemical. However, I have a dog and I don’t want him to contract anything either, but I’m not sure if demineralized distilled water has any harmful effects for pets.

No, it is not safe. Our bodies and our pets' bodies lose electrolytes through perspiration. Demineralized and distilled water do not contain the minerals needed to replace these electrolytes, and that can eventually lead to kidney failure. Although small quantities of demineralized and distilled water will not harm your pet, it cannot be their only source of water.
