How much water should athletes drink in a day?

My daughter is on the track team at her school, and I want her to be able to achieve her peak performance as an athlete. There is a lot of information and advice on how much water athletes should drink before and during vigorous exercise. What is the general amount of fluid for young athletes?

The exact amount of water needed varies based on intensity, environmental conditions, and body size. To maintain optimal hydration throughout the day, young athletes should drink ½ to 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight. For example, someone weighing 160 pounds should drink 80 to 160 ounces of water a day.
