Can dehydration reduce the ability to recover in-between rest periods?

Asked 2 years ago

My daughter is on the basketball team and I want to ensure that she’s taking care of herself and nothing hinders her performance. I’m aware that hydration is key for young athletes, but I want to know when the best time is for her to hydrate during a sporting competition. I don't want her to get injured during a game or not be at her best.

Dehydration can impair both exercise performance and recovery. Your daughter should drink plenty of water in the hours leading up to her practice. During her game, it's recommended to take 4 to 6 gulps of water every 15 to 20 minutes. Once the game is finished, it's also important to replenish the fluids lost while sweating.
