Can I get sick if I drink too much electrolyte-infused water?

Asked 2 years ago

I usually drink water before, during, and after my workouts just to avoid dehydration. My teammates suggested I start drinking electrolyte-infused water instead of regular water to improve my performance. I drink a lot of water and I’m worried I might get sick if I drink too much electrolyte water, especially during heavy workout sessions.

Drinking too much electrolyte water causes an excess of potassium, resulting in muscle weakness and abnormal heart rhythms. Rather drink a combination; hydrate with normal water before your workout, and drink electrolyte water during and after. Avoid drinking more than 1 liter of electrolyte water per hour so your kidneys have a chance to get rid of any excess.
