What not to eat after labor?

Asked 13 days ago

I'm due in a week, and I'm trying to get prepared for postpartum and breastfeeding. I've been reading a lot about what to eat to support milk supply and recovery, but I'm also wondering about foods to avoid after labor. I want to be extra careful, especially in those early weeks. Are there any foods that are generally considered off-limits postpartum, particularly while breastfeeding?

I remember freaking out about this too!

Here's what I learned from my experience and chatting with other moms:

  1. I'm not big on alcohol, but if you are, it's best to avoid it for a while. Some moms do the whole "pump and dump" thing, but honestly, it's easier to just skip it.
  2. You don't have to give it up completely (thank god!), but maybe stick to 1-2 cups a day. Your baby might be wired enough without extra caffeine! ☕
  3. Some babies get gassy or fussy if you eat spicy food. Mine did, so I had to say goodbye to my beloved hot sauce for a while. 😭
  4. Avoid the big predator fish. Stick to salmon, tilapia, etc.
  5. Peppermint and sage can apparently mess with your milk supply.
