Can reverse osmosis filters remove essential nutrients from the water I drink?

My cousin recommended a reverse osmosis filter to me when I was looking for a water filter for my new apartment. I looked it up online and discovered that it can remove a wide range of contaminants from water. I'm concerned that it will also remove essential minerals from my drinking water.
