Is it possible to use a reverse osmosis water filter with well water?

I recently moved off the grid to my new ranch, where I have a private well for drinking water. I have yet to have the water tested, but I want to improve the water quality. For that extra layer of protection, my friend suggested using a reverse osmosis filter. Can they be used for this?
